Ross Penyard Singers were formed in October 2000 to provide an opportunity for people of any age and experience to sing together.
Our repertoire covers a wide range of music, from baroque to pop. We perform two concerts per year, usually in May and November. We also sing occasionally at weddings and charity events and have a carol concert in Ross just before Christmas. Dates for concerts are agreed at the start of our season (September) and we try to bring a different musical flavour to each concert.
We do not hold auditions. The only requirement for membership is an enthusiasm for singing. It helps to be able read music, but if you can’t then we can provide support. If you like to sing, then do join us!
Our Music Director – Peter Johnson
Peter Johnson, Professor of Music, was formerly Head of Research at Birmingham Conservatoire and is a very experienced keyboard player, choir trainer and conductor.
Brought up in Dursley, Gloucestershire, Peter was taught piano and organ by Herbert Sumsion at Gloucester Cathedral. Graduating from Cambridge, he taught composition in Brazil for four years before return to complete his doctorate. He has subsequently pursued a career combining academic work and performance.
Major choral works he has conducted include the Verdi Requiem and Tippett’s A Child of our Time. He has worked extensively with church choirs (of diverse shapes and sizes), and for many years ran a chamber choir specialising in cathedral music, deputising for the resident choirs at Canterbury, Westminster Abbey, Worcester, Gloucester and many others. Now retired, we are very pleased to have appointed him as our Music Director.
